Instructions

  1. 1

    1. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.

  2. 2

    2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.

  3. 3

    3. Add the vegetable oil and stir until the mixture becomes crumbly and resembles coarse meal.

  4. 4

    4. Add 1/2 cup of the warm water (ideally 105-110°F), then gradually mix in the remaining water one tablespoon at a time until a shaggy dough forms.

  5. 5

    5. Dust your work surface lightly with flour and turn the dough onto it, then knead 6 to 8 times until the surface becomes smooth.

  6. 6

    6. Separate the dough into 10 equal balls.

  7. 7

    7. With a rolling pin, flatten each ball into a thin 8-inch round.

  8. 8

    8. Set a 12-inch skillet over medium-high heat and leave it dry (no oil needed).

  9. 9

    9. Lay one tortilla in the hot skillet and watch until brown spots appear on the underside, then flip it over.

  10. 10

    10. Let the second side cook until it develops light brown patches.
